The Frank O. Richards papers contains statistical and narrative pertaining primarily to Homer G. Phillips Hospital, the St. Louis municipal hospital founded and operated for African Americans in 1937, but also to two other institutions, City Hospital No. 2 and the Peoples’ Hospital, that treated black patients during decades of official racial segregation. Included are files on William H. Sinkler, medical director of Phillips Hospital from 1941 until 1960. The files in Box 1 in particular document the writing of his chapter, “The St. Louis Story,” in A Century of Black Surgeons. Box 2 contains later additions, notably an undergraduate thesis by Dean Lee Kolnick (2003) on Homer G. Phillips Hospital.

The images were compiled by Frank O. Richards, M.D. as illustrations for his chapter "St. Louis Story - Homer G. Phillips Hospital," in: A Century of Black Surgeons: The U.S.A. Experience, ed. by Claude H. Organ and Margaret Kosiba (1987).

This collection consists of 306 Photographs, postcards, and course cards collected by Robert E. Schleuter. The photographs and postcards primarily depict hospitals in England, France, Austria, Germany, and St. Louis. A selection of the postcards depict medical subjects in art, as well as French postcards depicting "humorous" medical subjects. The course cards are from St. Louis Medical College and Missouri Medical College.

This small collection consists of pharmaceutical items from the S. Pfeiffer Manufacturing Company (3965 Laclede Avenue), owned and operated by Adolph Pfeiffer. The material includes three funnels used for filling pill bottles; a wooden herb and powder mixing trough; cast iron cork press; three wooden pill counting shovels; and one roll of Schoenfeld K & L Tea labels.

Files containing documents and information compiled by and about Drs. Irene E. Karl (1915-2006) and Michael M. Karl (1915-2006). Correspondence, scientific papers and publications, documents concerning the Karl Lectureship, press releases and press coverage of the Karls' careers and achievements. A copy of the 28th ed of Manual of Medical Therapeutics (1995) inscribed and dedicated to Michael Karl (to be retained with collection as an artifact). The files and items were given as one collection, with no overall discernable order.

William Beaumont Photographs and Artifacts

This collection consists of 327 photographs and artifacts related to William Beaumont. The majority of the photographs depict scenes from annual pilgrimages to Beaumont's grave conducted by the St. Louis Medical Society and related organizations. Other depicted subjects include views of sites where William Beaumont was born, lived, and worked, views of the site where Alexis St. Martin was accidentally shot, and several copy negatives of letters and certificates related to Beaumont. See also PC001 for original copies of the letters and certificates. Artifacts in the collection include two XIII International Physiological Congress medallions featuring the profile of William Beaumont, and a miniature painted plaster bust of Beaumont.

This collection consists of 103 certificates, medals, plaques, academic hoods, and miscellaneous memorabilia documenting the career of Evarts A. Graham. The certificates include degree certificates, honorary degree and fellowship certicates, award certificates, and memorial certificates from the Barnes Hospital Board of Trustees, the American College of Surgeons, and the State of Missouri. Medals, pins, and medallions include the French Legion D'Honneur Medal, the Lister Medal awarded by the Royal College of Surgery of England, the American Cancer Society Award Medal, among various award medals, distinguished service medals, and medical society medals. Miscellany includes a stethoscope owned by Graham, a Journal of Thoracic Surgey, Graham's application and membership cards to the St. Louis Medical Society, and a copy of a letter from Graham to Ernest Wynder informing Wynder of his cancer diagnosis.
