Bound volumes of the collected scientific publications of W. Maxwell Cowan. Most deal with neurology and the neurosciences, specifically neuroanatomy and neurobiology.

Two bound notebooks: 1. Clinical Records/care book, May 1892 to May 1897 (includes correspondence laid in book); 2. Fee/consultation book, October 1877 to July 1880.

This collection contains a set of reprints that Dr. Allen gave to the medical library of Washington University in 1965, and the photographs relating to an award he received in 1971 from the St. Louis Medical Society. The reprints include Dr. Allen’s reports of his ground-breaking work on progesterone, the Blue Color Test for DHIA in diagnosis of adrenal tumors, and the development of the “Allen Correction.”

Dr. Edmund B. Alvis’ papers document his continued connection with the Washington University Class of 1934, his service with the 21st General Hospital during World War II, and his patient care and research work in ophthalmic surgery from 1934. Types of materials in the collection include correspondence, photographs, publications, records of hospitalized cases and operations, research notes, and case reports.

FC149 (Marshall B. Conrad collection): Eulogies, obituaries (2004), and a genealogy composed by the donor, Joann Conrad (2005).

The papers document Cordonnier’s research in urology, his teaching and membership in the Clinical Society of Genito-urinary Surgeons. They include correspondence and reprints of articles. Selected photographs and certificates of Cordonnier are located in the visual collections of the Becker Library.

This collection is comprised mostly of Dr. Cori's personal and professional correspondence, although a few series contain materials relating to his research.

Correspondence of James Barrett Brown, Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, while chief of plastic surgery at the Valley Forge General Hospital, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, 1943-1945. Also contains files of photographs of patients illustrating treatments. The collection includes 20 reprints, dating from 1931 to 1942.

Thirty-three medical journal article reprints dating from 1962 to 1979. Principal topics include hematology and anemia.

This collection contains materials related to Wesley Clark’s work in the field of computer science and his involvement in international scholarly exchanges, with a small part of the collection related to his personal life. Materials related to his work in computer science focus primarily on the LINC (Laboratory INstrument Computer), Macromodular Computer Systems and processing written Chinese for computer display. There is a modest representation in the collection of Clark’s non-LINC work carried out at MIT:  Project Whirlwind, Lincoln Writer, L-1, and TX-2. These portions of the collection contain technical reports, memos, prototype drawings, LINC Evaluation program proceedings, publications, working notebooks, and notecards. The notebooks Wesley Clark used to develop his design of the LINC are of particular interest. Contract work represented includes Xerox PARC and Burroughs Corporation and contain expense statements, check stubs, reports, consulting agreements and correspondence.

Clark was involved in scholarly exchanges with the People’s Republic of China and the collection contains materials on multiple trips to China and materials from the CSCPRC (Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People’s Republic of China). Of particular interest is the 1972 visit to China where Clark, along with five other American computer experts (most accompanied by their wives), were selected to tour Chinese computer facilities. Materials include correspondence, minutes, newsletters, itineraries, travel journals, conference materials, brochures, articles, reports, notes, and ephemera.

Roughly half the collection is visual material in the form of photographs, contact sheets, negatives and slides. The majority of the visual collection include contact sheets and negatives (with a few photos) related to the projects and work carried out by the Computer Research Laboratory (CRL), later renamed the Computer Systems Laboratory, and focus on the LINC and Macromodular Computer Systems. Photographs, negatives and contact sheets of the 1972 trip to China are also noteworthy.

This collection consists of material mostly from the year 1964, which was the year when the dispute between the medical school and Edgar M. Queeny, speaking for the Barnes Hospital Trustees, reached a point when there was practically no area of the joint operation on which the two institutions could agree.

Material regarding Carl V. Moore’s appointment as the first Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs is included, as well as correspondence from M. Kenton King, Dr. Dempsey’s successor as Dean. The text of Dr. Dempsey’s resignation as Dean, his curriculum vitae and his obituary from 1975 are also included in the papers.

Collection includes information regarding the Barnes Hospital-Joseph C. Edwards' Fund for the Care of Patients, including copies of Edwards' "The Art of Medicine, Part I: interpersonal relations between patient and doctor, and Part II: interpersonal relations between patient and hospital" (8 leaves) and "The Care of the Patient and the Art of Medicine, Part II: the cost of medical care" (23 leaves). Also included are materials relating to Dr. Edwards' service in World War II in General Hospital 21 and an undated curriculum vitae.

The collection consists of eight series. The attempt has been made to maintain the original order as much as possible, and particularly in the correspondence and scientific data series. Much of the material, however, was transmitted and accessioned in small portions in the years 1963-1966, and in some cases items were placed on display in the Library before being arranged in series. The microfilming, moreover, was carried out before the final arrangement and analysis of the collection could be made; somewhat premature filming decisions have, therefore, affected the final arrangement that is presented here and some items are missing or poorly described on the film.

The majority of this collection is comprised of Dr. Suntzeff’s reprints. Also included in this collection are photographs and various items relating to her personal and professional life. Dr. Suntzeff’s autobiography (Series 4) is a particularly interesting piece that is very telling of her experiences as a female doctor both in Russia and the United States.

A large, leather-bound, commemorative “In Memoriam” (5 pages) for William Taussig, MD.

The Mildred Trotter papers group consists of fourteen series. The Trotter papers are rich in information not only about her fields of expertise, but about the School of Medicine in general and about opportunities for women in medical science during the first half of the twentieth century. Users are advised to consult Series 1 first, since it contains narrative memoirs that may serve to place her accomplishments in contexts of her own choosing.

The Frederick J. Taussig Reprints are a collection of 36 scientific articles authored by Fred J. Taussig. The major subjects covered in Dr. Taussig’s articles include abortion and cancer of the vulva, cervix and vagina. Many of the articles contain case studies of patients seen at Barnard Free Skin and Cancer Hospital, St. Louis City Hospital, Washington University Hospital, and Barnes Hospital.

The collection composes of eight series, ranging from 1926 to 1977. It includes student notebooks, patient files, publications, correspondence, and military papers.

Papers include letters concerning Dr. Walton's experiences at General Hospital 21 and other medical units in North Africa during World War II, his notebooks of the years 1923-1925, during which Dr. Walton was a student, and an unpublished paper on Washington University, School of Medicine clinics.
