Biographical sketch of Isaac Alexander Bigger, Jr., M.D. (1893-1955), written at the request of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery. Bigger was professor and chief of the Department of Surgery of the Medical College of Virginia from 1930-1955; he served as the 27th president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.

This collection contains two folders.

The collection includes correspondence, legal papers, newspaper clippings, and bound short scientific publications documenting Bronfenbrenner’s career. There is also a file of papers relating to the Bronfenbrenner Memorial Award, established after his death.

Photocopies of memoir and letters of Barbee dating from the mid-1800s. Memoir includes descriptions of the cholera epidemics of 1849 and 1866.

Much of this collection was assembled by Louise H. Marshall, formerly of Washington University and later of the University of California, Los Angeles. Mrs. Marshall used materials related to Dr. Bishop that she had personally collected, as well as items supplied by her husband, Wade Marshall, and by Dr. Bishop’s brother, Frederick Bishop. All of these materials were placed together with items that had been kept in the Department of Neurology after Dr. Bishop’s death. Included in the collection are correspondence, manuscripts, notes, diagrams, and various ephemera. All photographs and many of the drawings in this collection were separated from the written documents and placed in a visual collection (VC034). The resulting arrangement reflects the mixed provenance and the many hands that have contributed to the collection. It is important to underscore that although Dr. Bishop himself never saw these collections as bibliographic entities, they were assembled in good faith that the effort would help to preserve the memory of this important scientist.

Butcher's files document his career and those of his colleagues such as Evarts A. Graham, Peter Heinbecker, Carl Moyer and Eugene M. Bricker. Included are correspondence and clippings about the Washington University School of Medicine, its Department of Surgery, and Barnes Hospital, as well as journal reprints and the texts of several lectures delivered by Butcher.

Summary: Chiefly reprints of Daughaday's scientific publications and book chapters dealing with endocrinology, metabolism, diabetes, growth hormones, dwarfism, and gigantism. Also Daughaday's memoir "The first 10 years of the Metabolism Division, 1951-1961" (5 leaves).

The Robert E. Shank papers include correspondence, reports, documents, architectural plans, manuscripts, speeches, and conference proceedings. The files document his interests in nutrition, diet, rehabilitation, and hospital administration. Also notable among them are information on his direction of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health and its programs. RES played a leading role in the construction of two Medical Center buildings, the Irene Walter Johnson Institute of Rehabilitation and the David P. Wohl, Jr. Memorial Clinics and in the development of the services housed there. RES’s papers also contain files on his work with the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army and government-sponsored nutrition programs in Latin America.

Box 1 contains the program of the scientific symposium honoring Alan L. Schwartz held on October 18, 2016 and five DVDs recording the presentations at the symposium. The speakers include: Louis Muglia, Norman Rosenblum, Jeffrey Saffitz, Arnold Strauss, Aaron Ciechanover, David Ransohoff, Brigitte Gomperts, Jeffrey Gordon, Kenneth Polonsky, and Margaret Hostetter. Also in the collection is the photo album honoring Schwartz made by the faculty, fellow, residents, students, and staff of the Department of Pediatrics and the St. Louis Children's Hospital presented to him on October 18, 2016. There is also a 22 page color printout of a powerpoint presentation entitled "Improving Our Children's Heath Through Research, Education, and Service," presented in September 2015 as the 20th State of Department [of Pediatrics] Address.

Box 2 contains a leatherbound volume illustrated with images from the life and career of Alan L. Schwartz presented to Schwartz at the time of his retirement as the Harriet B. Spoehrer Professor and head of the Department of Pediatrics, October 28, 2016.

Correspondence, speeches, lectures, notebooks, certificates, reprints, clippings and photos relating to radiology, neoplasms, cholecystography, kymography, mammography and hospital administration. Includes material on various national and international organizations with which Dr. Scott was associated.

The M. G. Seelig Reprints is a collection of 92 scientific articles authored or co-authored by M. G. Seelig that have been bound in two separate volumes. Volume 1 (1904-1922) is titled “Seelig Reprints.” Volume 2 (1904-1947) is titled “Collected Papers of M. G. Seelig, M.D.” Subjects include shock, clinical surgery, cancer, surgical pathology, and medical history.

This small collection includes medical campus publications and other news articles featuring Dr. Robert Senior, particularly as it relates to his position at Jewish Hospital’s Division of Respiratory and Critical Care and Pulmonary Care Department.  There is also documentation about his prominent role in the 1992 Clover Ball fundraiser which helped to fund a new Respiratory Research Laboratory at Jewish Hospital, as well as other items relating to the general history of Jewish Hospital.  Also included are a diploma and two photographs of Dr. Senior’s father-in-law, Joseph M. Orenstein, a 1930 graduate of the Washington University School of Medicine.

The Shaffer papers include ten document series including correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, short publications, notes, and his Ph.D. dissertation. Major subjects are his research work in biochemistry and the administration of WUSM as dean and head of the Department of Biological Chemistry. His work with Barnes Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, American Society of Biological Chemists and the U. S. Army in World War I are also subjects.

In 2006, this collection contained many deteriorated brittle carbon copies on newsprint and newspaper clippings that chipped or fractured with minimal handling. The acidic newsprint had stained surrounding documents and was losing contrast due to browning. Archives staff made acid-free photocopies to preserve content and contrast for future use and preservation microfilming.

The collection includes a curriculum vitae, manuscripts and notes, certificates, diplomas, licenses, and reprints of articles.

Reprints of 20 case reports and other scientific articles authored or co-authored by Elsworth S. Smith, Jr. (later known as Elsworth Smith) in one bound volume titled "Reprints Smith, I: 1899-1924." Subjects include heart disease and hypertension.

Papers from Jesse Ternberg's office: FC116 (Jessie L. Ternberg Papers) : 3 boxes. Box 1: correspondence and photographs from Dr. Ternberg's office on the 5th floor of Saint Louis Children's Hospital. Chiefly photographs, snapshots and portraits, of her patients and their families. Many of the snapshots and patient photos are unidentified and have been discarded. Box 2: Includes Dr. Ternberg's white coat, Babinski reflex hammer, solid brass paperweight commemorating the dedication of SLCH 1984, SLCH nametag button, specially made eyeglasses with magnifying lenses, and surgical instruments including two spoon shaped instruments custom made for Dr. Ternberg. Box 3: Consists of hanging file folders of reprints of her publications.

Curriculum vitae, scientific manuscripts, and collected reprints of shorter scientific publications, in three binders, 1948-1994.

This collection contains records related to Teresa J. Vietti, emeritus professor of pediatrics at Washington Unviersity School of Medicine. The contents of the collection include photographs, correspondence, articles, certificates, biographical information including a CV, and a signed first edition of her textbook Clinical Pediatric Oncology (1973). The majority of the correspondence and articles in the collection pertain to Teresa Vietti's identical twin sister, Ardel, and the search for her wherabouts after she was kidnapped by members of the Viet Cong on May 30, 1962. Some of the correspondence was originally sent to Teresa's parents, Grace and Victor Vietti, and includes investigative reports filed by the Department of State.
