This collection consists of 29 artifacts from the professional life of Franklin E. Walton (1902-1981), including photographs, a drawing, an academic diploma, an academic hood, and an intaglio print of Barnes Hospital by Gustav Goetsch (1907-1994). Primarily, the subjects depicted in the photographs include portraits of Walton and his colleagues at both Barnes Hospital and the 21st General Hospital, as well as several group portraits of the Wasington University School of Medicine (WUSM) class of 1927 at class reunions.

Collection includes correspondence with the Washington University School of Medicine Archives staff regarding 21st General Hospital, its history, records, members, and reunions. Also includes unpublished manuscripts about the 21st General Hospital, correspondence between Cady and other members of the unit, and reprints of several journal articles authored by Cady in the 1920s. "A Cady Saga" is a family genealogy completed by Cady in 1983.

This collection consists of 64 photographs, drawings, certificates, and artifacts from the medical and military career of Thomas H. Burford. Photographs include group portraits with friends and colleagues and portraits of Evarts A. Graham. Drawings are by F.C. Kelly and depict surgical proceedures. Certificates include diplomas, awards, military appointment and discharge certificates, proclamations, certificates of appreciation, and in memorium certificates. Artifacts include a key to the city of Vicennes, Indiana, foreign currency collected during Burford's overseas military service during World War II, and a Society of Thoracic Surgery felt badge.

This collection consists of 85 photographs documenting the personal and professional life of Henry G. Schwartz. Many of the images in the collection are digital surrogates of the the original photographs that primarily depict scenes with Schwartz and other men and women serving as United States Army officers in World War II. Additional digital images depict two young boys playing outside and posing on the steps of a house. The other photographs in the collection are primarily portraits of friends and colleagues of Schwartz, including Carl and Gerty Cori, Joseph Erlanger, Ernest Sachs, Sidney I. Schwab, and Evarts A. Graham. Those photographs (VC102069-084) are also arranged and described as Series 5 in the Henry G. Schwartz Papers (FC112).

Correspondence of James Barrett Brown, Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, while chief of plastic surgery at the Valley Forge General Hospital, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, 1943-1945. Also contains files of photographs of patients illustrating treatments. The collection includes 20 reprints, dating from 1931 to 1942.

This collection consists of 54 certificates and 2 academic hoods awarded to Wendell G. Scott throughout his career, including diplomas, awards, membership certificates, and certificates related to Scott's military service.

The 21st General Hospital Records is a collection of manuscripts and war memorabilia brought together and preserved by veterans of a military unit. Several of the series were generated as official records of the 21st General Hospital when it was stationed overseas, 1942-1945. But also included are many files and writings compiled or composed by the principal donor, Lee D. Cady, M.D. as late as 1975. The collection is designated a record group because it documents the history of an organization, rather than the career of any particular individual and because this organization at its inception was sponsored by Washington University School of Medicine.

The record group, as processed and described in this inventory by the Archives staff, is comprised of seventeen series. The series include narrative histories and reports, unit newspapers, records of the unit before activation, training materials, transit orders and rosters, files pertaining to each of the overseas duty stations, personnel files, general subject files, maps and plans, and select publications concerning the war and locales where the unit served.

This collection consists of 724 photographs, drawings, diagrams, posters, newspaper clippings, and sheet music, and other ephemera related to the 21st General Hospital. The photographs primarily depict staff and patients of the 21st General Hospital from when it was stationed overseas 1942-1945, as well as views of hospital buildings and grounds. Drawings and diagrams include plans for wiring and plumbing, architectural and ground plans, and some schematic drawings of hospital equipment. Other ephemera in the collection include hand-drawn posters advertising Officers' Club dances, newspaper clippings from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Pictures Section depicting operations at General Hospital 21, and cartoon watercolors depicting soldiers and Red Cross workers.

This small collection is primarily focused on Dr. Kerr's military service during WWII.

The items in this collection represent different aspects of Dr. Schwartz’s personal and professional life. Series 1 (General Hospital 21) and Series 2 (Consultant in Neurosurgery, Vietnam) contain files relating to Dr. Schwartz’s military service. Another important segment of this collection is comprised of his lecture notes in Series 3. The remaining series include photographs, certificates, films and videotapes, memorabilia, and the many awards Dr. Schwartz received throughout his lifetime.

This collection consists of 137 photographs and drawings documenting the years Benjamin H. Charles spent serving as a major for the 21st General Hospital during World War II. The collection includes photographs of Charles, fellow hospital staff and other military personnel, and German prisoners of war (POWs) at various locations in France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, and Algeria. The collection also includes watercolors depicting Charles and various scenes from Bou Hanifia, Algeria by German POW Walter Köhnlein, as well as several promissory notes and a Taittinger champagne label.

This collection consists of 30 photographs depicting scenes from 12th Field Hospital, Camp Bowie, Texas, and 2 photographs of George J.L. Wulff in England and German during World War II.

Reports and documents relating to the 21st General Hospital during World War II and its overseas service in North Africa, Italy, and France. Several documents relate to the POW section of the hospital, of which Charles was the chief officer.

Collection includes information regarding the Barnes Hospital-Joseph C. Edwards' Fund for the Care of Patients, including copies of Edwards' "The Art of Medicine, Part I: interpersonal relations between patient and doctor, and Part II: interpersonal relations between patient and hospital" (8 leaves) and "The Care of the Patient and the Art of Medicine, Part II: the cost of medical care" (23 leaves). Also included are materials relating to Dr. Edwards' service in World War II in General Hospital 21 and an undated curriculum vitae.

Cady recounts some of the history of the 21st General Hospital and its service during World War II in Africa, Italy and France.

This interview covers material which already exists in book form in the Washington University School of Medicine Archives. Because of the poor quality of the tape from which the interview was transcribed, this version is probably not be the best source for information on Dr. Cady’s service as commanding officer of the 21st General Hospital. Perkoff describes his accelerated educational experience at Washington University during World War II and his decision to accept an internship at the University of Utah. He discusses his early research in metabolic and hereditary diseases at the University of Utah, where he was on the faculty and chief of the medical service of the Veterans Administration Hospital. Perkoff relates his returning to St. Louis, his efforts at St. Louis City Hospital to establish a full-time Department of Medicine, and the founding of the Division of Health Care Research at the Washington University School of Medicine. There is an extended discussion of the establishment of a health maintenance organization at Washington University, the Medical Care Group, its structure, financial structure and goals, and its role in training physicians. Perkoff also discusses the delivery of health care in rural settings, his predictions for the development of allied health personnel programs, and the future of medical care delivery.
