This collection consists of 166 photographs and glass lantern slides depicting the professional life of Evarts A. Graham. Primarily the photographs depict portraits of Graham, as well as various scenes of Graham lecturing to students, performing surgery, working with patients, and with colleagues at dinners or conferences.The collection also includes Barnes Hospital Surgical Staff photographs, interior views of Graham's office taken just after his death, and photographs sent to Graham from former students. The glass slides in the collection primarily depict demonstrations of a postural drainage table in various positions, and chest x-rays and microscopic views of lung tissue from Dr. James Gilmore.

Folder includes a photocopy of a typed caption for the photograph that reads: "Driving the patient 'to distraction' - with gay walls / St. Louis, MO . . . Here's the newest and most approved way of keeping the patient's mind off the operation, as he (or she) lies nervously on the white-enameled table while ghostly figures hover about. The walls and ceiling of this operating room in the Johnson-Rand Surgical Pavilion of Barnes Hospital have been covered with fantastic scenes in brilliant colors, that would capture the attention of practically any person, particularly children. The subjects include George Washington chopping down a tree, Adam and Eve leaving the garden of Eden, elephants, rabbits, penguins, gnomes, mermaids, and deep-sea animals. There are about 300 figures in all."

Handwritten caption on the back of the photograph reads: "This photograph was sent to Dr. Graham by Dr. Alfred Brown, Medical Arts Bldg., Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Brown took this picture at the meeting of the American Surgical Association (May 1936) just after Dr. Graham was selected to the Presidency of the A.S.A."
