Photographs, c.1879-2010.

Series 2 is divided into 13 sub-series based on topic depicted in the photograph and format of the photograph. Topics depicted include the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Auxiliary; various construction projects; hospital departments; hospital employee events; groups of employees; hospital events; the hospital’s exterior and interior; and photographs of individuals and patients. Format of photographs included in this series are photograph prints, postcards, and photographs stored on CD. Also included in this series are photograph release and consent forms.

Printing Blocks.

Series 5 contains copper plate and wood printing blocks largely featuring halftone etchings of various images of St. Louis Children's Hospital and Ridge Farm. One block of the set includes the following text handwritten on the back, "5/6/31 Mrs. Severance for paper for [American Journal of Nursing] gave pictures and returned..." [remainder of text illegible].

Financial Records and Patient Statistics, 1879-1995.

Series 9 includes various material related to the finances and patients of St. Louis Children’s Hospital. It is divided into four sub-series based on the financial or patient aspect covered by the records. Sub-series 1 includes financial material from the early days of St. Louis Children’s Hospital; sub-series 2 contains documentation of hospital endowments; sub-series 3 includes financial reports and patient statistics from various hospital departments; and sub-series 4 contains three patient ledgers from the hospital Intensive Care Unit.

Photographic Slides, 1879-2002.

Series 3 is divided into 11 sub-series based on topic depicted on the photograph slide and the original storage of some slides together. Topics depicted include St. Louis Children’s Hospital interior and exterior; events; patients; and staff. Slides stored together include those in binders labeled, “historical,” “patients,” “physicians,” “units,” and “SLCH West County facility”; as well as slides labeled “public relations” and slides originally stored together in slide trays.

Histories, Chronologies, and Other Historic Materials, 1879-1980.

Series 14 includes administrative materials from the early years of St. Louis Children’s Hospital’s operation, as well as histories of the hospital written in later years. It also includes various contracts and legal documents related to St. Louis Children’s Hospital. A portion of the materials in this series are divided into two sub-series, with the first sub-series containing various contacts entered into by St. Louis Children’s Hospital and gathered together into a binder. The second sub-series contains materials related to book “A Goodly Heritage: St. Louis Children’s Hospital centennial history 1879-1979” by Marion Hunt. The remainder of the series contains legal documents, histories, and other early hospital administrative documents.

Public Relations Materials, External Publications, and Scrapbooks, 1904-2007.

Series 7 contains materials related to St. Louis Children’s Hospital marketing and public relations, as well as external publications including newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and magazines related to the hospital. The series is divided four sub-series based on type of external publication. See also oversized newspaper clippings in Box 132.

Martha Parsons Free Hospital for Children, 1891-1952.

The Augusta Free Hospital for Children of St. Louis, MO (later Martha Parsons) was incorporated in 1884 to care for children with orthopedic ailments. In 1890 the name of the institution was changed to the Martha Parsons Free Hospital, in recognition of the generous contributions of Charles Parsons to the endowment fund as a memorial to his wife. By 1910, the hospital had outgrown its buildings at the southwest corner of Channing Avenue and School Street. Lacking the funds for building a new hospital, the Martha Parsons Free Hospital affiliated with the St. Louis Children's Hospital, which was already planning the construction of a new, modern hospital building. Series 11 includes various administrative materials related to Martha Parsons Hospital, with the majority of the series containing material generating following its affiliation with St. Louis Children’s Hospital in 1910. The series is organized into oversized and standard sized items, with the two sizes then organized chronologically.

Audits (Various), 1916-1989.

Series 16 consists of audits of various types, conducted by various agencies, on various hospital departments. The series is divided into five sub-series by department audited and type of material. Sub-series 1, 2, and 3 are related to St. Louis Children’s Hospital finances, as well as Price-Waterhouse’s audits of these fiannces. Sub-series 4 contains audits of the Child Guidance Clinic and sub-series 5 contains audits of health and patient records by the Central Eastern Missouri Professional Review Organization Committee (CEMPROC).

Staff Files, 1912-1997.

Series 17 contains files of and about St. Louis Children’s Hospital staff members. It is divided into eight sub-series which contain records generated by specific staff positions, meeting minutes of various staff committees, staff manuals, staff division reports, individual staff biographical files, some staff lists, and a staff register. The papers of the nursing service and of the position of pediatrician-in-chief are included, as are the meeting minutes of the Medical Staff Committee, the Planning Committee of the Department of Nursing, department managers, and the Medical Staff Society Executive Committee.

Oversized Items

Box 132 in Series 19 contains miscellaneous items which are too large to be stored with the remainder of the collection. The series to which these items would otherwise belong are noted in the folder description for each.

Internal Publications, 1879- .

Series 1 contains serial publications issued by St. Louis Children’s Hospital and organizations associated with the hospital. The series is organized alphabetically by publication title, and then chronologically within the publication titles.
