This collection includes items related to Barnes Hospital. From the bequest which funded the creation of the hospital; to the hospital’s opening at the end of 1914; and continuing up to and beyond its merger with Jewish Hospital in 1996, the history of Barnes Hospital is documented in a variety of material formats. The collection includes administrative records; staff correspondence; hospital publications; newspaper and magazine clippings; scrapbooks; photographs; VHS tapes; and artifacts. Of note is the collection of hospital publications (series 4), which includes serial magazines and annual reports of the hospital, as well as ephemera such as brochures and flyers. Also noteworthy is the hospital superintendent’s correspondence collection (series 3) covering the years 1913-1926; the hospital’s book of forms from the year of its opening (series 1); a scrapbook containing correspondence of Robert A. Barnes and the original trustees of Barnes Hospital (series 8); and the Hospital's Staff Register covering October 13, 1915 to January 13, 1958 (series 5).

This collection includes 37 certificates and artifacts documenting the professional and scientific achievements of Joseph Erlanger. Certificates and medallians include various honorary degree diplomas, award certificates and medallions, and scientific society membership certificates. The collection also includes various academic hoods, an academic gown, Erlanger, Gasser and Bishop's home-made cathode ray tube, and the death mask of Erlanger.

Scrapbooks compiled originally by the WUSM Public Relations Office include clippings, brochures, and reprinted articles mainly from St. Louis newspapers and campus sources. These materials describe a wide range of activities of faculty, staff and their departments and divisions. The WUSM Public Relations Office was an earlier incarnation of Medical Public Affairs.

The Samuel B. Guze Papers are arranged in eleven organizational series. The bulk of this large collection is contained in Series 3 (General Files) and Series 5 (Manuscripts). Included in the Guze Papers are letters, journal articles, and handwritten notes. However, a significant portion of the collection consists of drafts of articles that Dr. Guze and his colleagues compiled for publication, as well as the corresponding data collection documents used for research and analysis. Especially noteworthy in the Guze Papers are the two oral histories taken with Dr. Guze, as well as his personal diary located in Series 10. This collection consists of 124 photographs and glass lantern slides and an academic cap and gown from the personal and professional life of Helen Tredway Graham. Depicted subjects include portraits of Helen and her family from throughout her life, personal and professional photographs of Helen and her husband Evarts A. Graham, and photographs of and with the Grahams' colleagues at Washington University School of Medicine.

This collection consists of 54 photographs and 2 postcards depicting the professional life and scientific achievements of Dr. Joseph Erlanger. Depicted subjects include formal portraits of Erlanger, scenes from a dinner hosted by President John F. and Jackie Kennedy at the White House for Nobel Laureates, studio views of Erlanger's Nobel Prize medal and certificate, and scenes from the presentation of Erlanger's papers to Washington University School of Medicine's Library in 1963.

This collection consists of 4 drawings and 2 certificates from John B. Shapleigh. Three of the drawings are cartoon caricatures that include a cut-out photograph of the subject's face and a drawn body.

This collection consists of 63 Photographs, negatives and slides. The collection sonsists primarily of images of physicians, staff and structures of the Homer G. Phillips Hospital. The images were compiled by Frank O. Richards, M.D. as illustrations for his chapter "St. Louis Story - Homer G. Phillips Hospital," in: A Century of Black Surgeons: The U.S.A. Experience, ed. by Claude H. Organ and Margaret Kosiba (1987).

This collection consists of 17 instruments used by George H. Bishop when he was conducting physiology research at Washington University School of Medicine.

This collection consists of 70 cytological drawings and 5 sketchbooks drawn by E.V. Cowdry. Many of the drawings were matched to articles written by Cowdry and originally published between 1911 and 1932. See FC008, Series 72 for reprints of the relevant articles.

This collection consists of 21 photographs, certificates, and artifacts from Robert C. Milburn, a graduate of Barnes Medical College in 1899. Photographs include group portraits with Milburn, including a composite portrait of Barnes Medical College class of 1899 and a tintype with Milburn and his partner Dr. J.A. Rea. Artifacts include clippings, a business card, a paperweight, a urinometer, and a surgical instrument kit.

This collection consists of 629 photographs, negatives, and glass lantern slides chronicling the life and career of E.V. Cowdry. The majority of the photographs are scenes from Cowdry's professional travels in China, India, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, and South Africa. The glass lantern slides specifically depict scenes from Cowdry's travels in China.

This collection consists of 30 photographs depicting scenes from 12th Field Hospital, Camp Bowie, Texas, and 2 photographs of George J.L. Wulff in England and German during World War II.

Depicted subjects include class photographs of students at Washington University School of Medicine, portraits of Virignia Minnich as a young woman when she was Vilray P. Blair's patient, and scenes from Thailand, Turkey, and WUSM.

This collection consists of 12 photographs depicting scenes from the early days of electroencephalography, including photographs published in LIFE magazine and the Sunday Mirror, and brain wave graphs published by Hallowell Davis, et. al. in the Journal of Neurophysiology.
