History

Alexander Langsdorf Jr. was born in St. Louis and received his undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis and his Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Designed for use in medical research, Langsdorf helped co-develop a cyclotron for splitting atomic particles at Washington University. During World War II, Langsdorf was on the team that developed the atomic bomb, though he was a vocal opponent of the use and proliferation of nuclear weapons.
