History

William Barry Wood, Jr. earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and was a quarterback on the 1931 All-American team. At the time, he was one of only three individuals to win ten major letters in Harvard athletic history. Wood earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University Medical School and completed his internship and residency training there as well.

Upon completion of his residency, Wood was awarded a National Research Council Fellowship and returned to Boston for a year to research infections disease at Harvard Medical School. He then spent two years as an instructor at Johns Hopkins before accepting a position as Busch Professor and head of the department of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. He returned to Johns Hopkins in 1955 as vice president and professor of microbiology.
